2014: The Dude Thanks You

On September 27th, cancer-haters came together once again at North Bowl for a wonderful day of bowling and night of celebrating.  Because of your generosity, we are pleased to announce that nearly $50,000 has been raised in 2014 for Philly!

Every dollar raised goes to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to further their mission: to cure blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Because of your support, we are able to continue to fund these initiatives right here in Eastern Pennsylvania. Much of the credit goes to our fantastic teams for the fundraising dedication.

The in-kind support from PHL17, City Paper, Metro, Chorus Photography, Linds Bowling, Sound Man Mike, and Yards Brewing Company was truly appreciated as well, and from all of the contributing businesses and restaurants who donated prizes. Our gratitude goes out to North Bowl for providing us with a perfect home once again, and to the awesome bands: Seoul Delhi, You Do You and The Racket Boys who rocked our after party. TDHC would not be possible if it were not for all of these collective efforts.

TDHC 2014 Honorary Heroes

Introducing our Honorary Heroes for TDHC Philly's 2014 campaign! This is why we roll.

Cancer affects all of us. Our goal at The Dude Hates Cancer is to raise money that will lead to a cure for these diseases. LLS is making significant progress towards that goal, and survival rates are increasing every year. In short, your money is saving lives. Lives like that of our honorary heroes, Greg Hamilton and Sabina Borza. Here are their stories.

Greg Hamilton was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2010 and has been battling this rare cancer since then. His treatments have been arduous and have included radical surgeries, intense radiation and very extensive chemotherapy. Yet in the face of constant hardship and uncertainty, he spends his spare time fundraising and creating products in an effort to help others. He and his wife started a clothing line called Chemo Cozy, providing fleece garments specifically designed for patients during chemotherapy. He was also nominated and ran for LLS’ Man of the Year this year, raising $25,000. He continues to work with LLS to create more fundraising opportunities.

Greg is still going through treatments but manages to live his life to the fullest. After one of his many surgeries, he had to wear a body brace for 6 weeks (photo above). To most people he was a guy in a brace, but to his 5-year-old son Jack, he’s a super hero! He says, “Cancer sucks, but it has given me the awareness of mortality, and with that, an appreciation for the endless opportunities to enjoy life while helping others.” Although he doesn’t have leukemia or lymphoma, Greg’s experience has led him and his wife Ellen to become champions for all cancers. We can all learn from his incredible dedication, resilience, and positive spirit.

When Sabina Borza was 37 weeks pregnant, she felt an enlarged lymph node above her collarbone. She was induced, and after giving birth, a biopsy confirmed that it was Hodgkin's lymphoma. She started chemotherapy and then had to undergo proton radiation therapy. She started volunteering her time to the cause while was going through radiation treatments and while caring for her newborn daughter. Sabina has fundraised & trained for the Broad Street Run with Moms in Training, joined the organizing committee for The Dude Hates Cancer, and is a part of support groups & advisory councils at the University of Pennsylvania. She is looking for ways to help other new moms battling a cancer diagnosis.

Sabina has now been in remission since February 2014. Her healthy outlook is encouragement to our fundraising efforts; her positive spirit an inspiration to all! “Without the treatments and medications that are available today, I wouldn't be here to raise my daughter. These fundraising efforts have real impact. You are changing lives, including your own, by participating in TDHC. The money raised will be used to improve the lives of cancer patients in so many ways—from funding research, to establishing support groups, to advocacy. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all that you are doing for me and millions of cancer patients."

Philly Hates Cancer! Spread the word

September is national blood cancer awareness month and we're inviting the whole city to get involved! Please join The Dude for an awareness effort that we're calling "Philly Hates Cancer."

We are asking businesses if they can run a one-day promotion to donate a percentage of their sales to the cause, e.g., 10%, 20%, etc. Another option is a per-item donation, such as a $1 donation for gift box purchase, or for every XYZ beer sold, etc. Any day in September would work, and for any duration of time-- you could offer the promotion for a day, a week, or all month!

The more businesses get on board, the further this can spread. We are asking all businesses to use the #phillyhatescancer hashtag and a customizable Philly Hates Cancer logo to promote their participation.

In return, we will list all participating businesses and their offers on the website, post about them in our social media, and try to drum up some added press in the media. Participation can bring positive publicity, and hopefully some new customers, too!

The goal is to get "Philly Hates Cancer" to become an annual city-wide event each year, leading up to The Dude Hates Cancer’s main event tournament (this year on Saturday 9/27)! You can select your participation level even if it's just 5% for a one-day promotion. As more businesses jump on board, collectively it could have a huge impact, both in raising awareness and funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society every year in September. All donations are 100% tax-deductible!

Three easy steps:

  1. Pick a September date
  2. Create a promotional offer or event
  3. Hate cancer with us!
